Artificial intelligence is being applied across the energy value chain: forecasting generation and demand, optimising plant heat rate and availability, scheduling maintenance before failure, and managing despatch across increasingly complex networks. The gains are real and, in several cases, already measurable.

The complication is that AI itself requires very large amounts of energy. Training and serving large models concentrates demand in data centres that draw continuously, at high density, and increasingly ask for round-the-clock clean supply. That makes data centre load a generation planning question rather than a footnote to it.

Where the optimisation gains are

Three areas deliver most of the near-term benefit. Forecasting — better prediction of solar and wind output narrows the reserve margin a system operator needs to hold. Asset optimisation — models that tune operating parameters against fuel cost, ambient conditions and despatch signals recover efficiency that manual operation leaves behind. And demand-side management — shifting flexible industrial and commercial load to hours when clean generation is abundant.

Each of these reduces waste in a system that already exists, which is generally cheaper than building new capacity to cover the same inefficiency.

Artificial intelligence can make the grid smarter, but it also arrives as a demand centre in its own right.

Planning for both sides of the ledger

The two facts have to be planned together. If AI-driven data centre demand is treated as an externality, it will be met by whatever generation is available at the margin. If it is anticipated, it can be matched with new clean capacity and storage at the point of connection, and its flexibility — some AI workloads can be time-shifted — used as a grid resource rather than a burden.

The net-zero contribution of AI depends less on the models themselves than on how deliberately the electricity behind them is procured.
